SMUGGLING OF MONEY PREVENTED IN PRESEVO

24. September 2014.

Customs officers at the Presevo border crossing prevented the attempted smuggling of more than 50,000 euros, which a three-member family tried to carry across the border.

By a detailed inspection of the “BMW X5” vehicle  with the Slovenian registration plates, which was, accompanied by his parents, driven from Croatia to Macedonia, by a Croatian national with ethnic Albanian background, the customs officers found a total of 83,100 euros.

“Part of the money, amounting to 30,000 euros, was hidden under the co-driver’s floor mat, while 10,000 euros were found in a suitcase in the back seat. Almost 40,000 euros were found in the driver's wallet, while over 4,000 euros were in his father's one”, the Customs Administration said.

The passengers said that they had earned the money by being involved in the patisserie business, which the family was dealing with.

The allowed amount of 10,000 euros was returned to each passenger, while the remainder, amounting to 53,100 euros, was detained until completion of the infringement procedure.
