Bujanovac - President of the Coordination Body of the Government of the Republic of Serbia for the Municipalities of Presevo, Bujanovac and Medvedja, Zoran Stankovic, said yesterday that he expected that if the Government of the Republic of Serbia adopted the requirements of the Albanian political leaders from South Serbia, it would be a step towards reaching a durable solution for that part of the country.

At a meeting held at the OSCE office in Bujanovac this February, the leaders of the Albanian political parties adopted a document known to the public as the eight-point platform, which is a proposal for solving, according to them, the most important problems.  The proposed platform is waiting to be placed on the agenda of some future session of the Government of the Republic of Serbia, after which, if adopted, it would become an official document for solving the problems of the Albanians from the municipalities of Presevo, Bujanovac and Medvedja.

Mr. Stankovic said that the solving of the problems of the Albanians from the three municipalities would be in accordance with the Constitution, the laws and the international conventions relating to the issues of national minorities and their rights and obligations.

"We simultaneously hope that the Albanian leaders from Presevo, Bujanovac and Medvedja would begin solving the economic problems of their countrymen, which are related to improving the quality of their life", said Mr. Stankovic.

He added that "representatives of the relevant government’s ministries, which deal with specific issues, should be involved in solving the problems.”

The proposed eight-point platform, which will become legally binding when and if it is adopted by the Serbian government, refers, among other things, to the collective liberties and rights, the use of the language, the national symbols, the return of refugees, education, integration of the Albanians in the public institutions and to improvement of the economic status of South Serbia.

This is the first platform that is supported by all the Albanian political parties from Presevo, Bujanovac and Medvedja about which the Serbian government will express its view.
