NATIONAL HEROES GET A NEW MONUMENT ON ”KISELA VODA”

21. March 2019.

Bujanovac – The monument to Aleksandar Stankovic and Josip Janjic on "Kisela Voda", who were members of the League of Communist Youth of Yugoslavia that were shot at that spot, has been demolished for some ten years now, but now the Association of Fighters of the National Liberation War says that it will be completely restored and that the surrounding area would be tidied up, so that this destination could once again become one of favorite excursion spots of the residents of Bujanovac.

The surrounding area of the monument with the fountain from which the mineral water flows is in poor condition today.

The letters on the monument are almost invisible, the stairs аrе ruined,  as well as the wall in the hole around the fountain, the shrubbery is dense and uneven, while the piles of garbage and plastic bags, like a sad décor, only complement the general picture of our negligence and oblivion.

Regardless of the ideology and prejudices, members of the League of Communist Youth of Yugoslavia from Bujanovac, who were shot at that spot by the occupiers at the end of 1943, certainly did not deserve that.

Bozidar Nedeljkovic, the Head of the Association of Fighters of the National Liberation War, says that with the advent of a good weather, the monument on Kisela voda and the surrounding area will get a new look.

According to him, a stone slab has already been ordered at the stone mill, which will be glued to the old monument.

He admits that the monument has been lying on the ground for ten years, because the Association of Fighters of the National Liberation War did not have the money for the works:

“We submitted requests for financial assistance to potential donors, as well as to the local self-government, and some of them have already responded and promised support.  Basically, we have the money now and the works will start soon, "Mr. Nedeljkovic said.

The Head of the Association of Fighters of the National Liberation War says he does not know how the monument has been knocked over, but adds that he is not sure whether it has fallen down by itself because of the “teeth of time”:

“Many symbols and monuments from the Second World War are in a poor state. It is a shame how a bust of Karpos in the village of Biljaca looks like, while the busts of Josif Janjic, Stojan Stankovic and Aleksandar Vasiljevic, which are in the park, have been knocked over several times, "Mr. Nedeljkovic says.

Josif Janjic kept his street in Bujanovac, which is now called Crkvena St, as well as Aleksandar Stankovic, who, however, after 1991, at the time of the Serbian enlightenment, gave the name  Saint Sava to a secondary school.
