"FIELD DAYS" EVENT HELD AT THE VILLAGE OF RAKOVAC

23. August 2017.

Bujanovac – The "Field Days" event was held at the village of Rakovac, which is situated in the municipality of Bujanovac. An experimental maize plot, which is one of ten such plots in the fours municipalities of the Pcinj District, was presented.

Dragan Nakic, a farmer from the village of Rakovac, says that he has been engaged in growing maize for the past four years.

"In cooperation with the Agricultural Professional Service from Vranje, I started using modern agricultural methods, which resulted in a good yield. In the previous years, when the advisory professional service was unavailable, I had a solid, yet not a good yield. Then, I did not do winter plowing and artificial fertilization in the fall, thanks to which my yield is now higher by 30 to 40 percent, "Mr. Nakic said.

Nada Lazovic Djokovic, an adviser on field and vegetable crops at the Agricultural Professional Service in Vranje, says that they have set up ten experimental maize plots this year, like the one in the village of Rakovac, where the “Field Days” event was held.

“Eight seed companies with over 40 hybrids participated in the event. This year is nonspecific because we did not have enough rainfall, due to which some crops’ yields will be lower by 50 percent compared to earlier periods. The average maize yield in the Pcinj district has been five and a half tons per hectare for the past ten years, so that we can freely say that this is one of the worst years in the last decade, "Ms. Lazovic Djokovic said.

The "Field Days" event was previously held in the villages of Ranutovac and Ribince.
