CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR THE ANNUAL MEDIA AWARD FOR TOLERANCE

The Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, with the support of the OSCE Mission to Serbia, as of November 16, 2015, which is the International Day of Tolerance, establishes the annual media award for best media articles and reports on combating discrimination and promoting equality and tolerance. Our goal is to familiarize the general public with the phenomenon of discrimination in Serbia, in which the key role is played by the media, the support provided to the reports promoting equality and tolerance in our society, then by the fight against prejudices and stereotypes against minorities, marginalized and vulnerable groups, and the raising of the visibility of the Commissioner.

Entitled to apply are journalists of all print and electronic media, local and national media in Serbia, who had published articles on a topic, which is specified in the call for applications, in the period from January 1 to October 15, 2015. Several journalists from one media outlet may apply, but each of them can submit only one text. The criteria to be assessed include: recognizing the phenomenon of discrimination, a decrease in stereotypes and prejudices, positive coverage, the promotion of equality and the usage of gender sensitive language.

Media articles and reports should be e-mailed, by October 15, 2015, to poverenik@ravnopravnost.gov.rs or posted to the Commissioner for the Equality (the call for applications for journalists), Beogradska 70, 11 000 Belgrade.  The application should include the media text and a brief biography of the author’s contacts. Format of the application: for the radio and television – the link and the CD with the report, for print and online media - the link and the published article in the PDF format.

The jury is composed of representatives of the Faculty of Political Sciences, the Faculty of Media and Communications, the Association of Journalists of Serbia, the Independent Association of Journalists of Serbia, the Independent Journalists' Association of Vojvodina, as well as of representatives of the OSCE Mission to Serbia and the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality. Their names will be posted on the website and facebook page of the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality.

Awards will be given in two categories:

First, second and third for a radio/TV report;

First, second and third for a printed /online text.

The awards are:

First award - a study visit to a European media outlet that has a good practice of promoting and protecting human rights and combating discrimination;

Second award - a digital photo album and a set of books;

Third award - a set of books.

The best media reports and the names of the male and female authors will be announced at the international conference "Serbia on the Path of Tolerance and Non-Discrimination" on November 16, 2015, as well as on the website and facebook page of the of the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality and the OSCE, and will also be published in the media guide, with a regular annual report of the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality for 2015. The award ceremony will be organized in the second half of November 2015.
