BUJANOVAC TO CONSTRUCT TRANSFER STATION FOR WASTE MANAGEMENT

27. February 2015.

Bujanovac “The municipality of Bujanovac provided most of the funds for the construction of a transfer station for waste management at Bujanovac landfill, so that we expect that the first phase of the project would be completed later this year”, said Fazila Azemovic , the Head of the Municipal Office for Local Economic Development.

She expects that the pollution in the municipality of Bujanovac will, thereby, be reduced, while it will pay off for the citizens to bring what they throw away to the transfer station, where they will be paid the value of secondary raw materials.

Ms. Azemovic stated that the Regional Protocol on Waste Management had been signed a few years before, and that, under it, the municipalities of Pcinj district should construct transfer stations at their landfills, as well as that non-recyclable garbage should be disposed in a sanitary landfill “Meteris” near Vranje.

“The municipality of Bujanovac is the first in Pcinj district which launches the construction of a transfer station for waste management in the city landfill.  The first phase of construction, for which the contract was signed,  includes the construction of access roads and the entire infrastructure, while the equipment for selection and recycling of waste will be provided in the second phase”, said Ms. Azemovic.

Bujanovac developed the project of construction of transfer station, the value of which is two million dinars, with the support of the European Progress Program.

“The beginning of selection and recycling of waste at Bujanovac landfill doesn’t only depend on when transfer station will be completed, but also on when the “Metris” landfill’s capacities will be expanded”, said Ms. Azemovic.

According to her, the municipality of Bujanovac opted for the construction of its transfer station with its own resources, although it had received from self-employed persons offers for the public- private partnership, with a 20-year concession.

“We calculated that the investment would pay off in six years, so that we decided to build the transfer station without a partner. The entire profit of the transfer station will go to our public utility company, and if we later enter into a partnership, it will be with a much smaller share of private capital,” said Ms. Azemovic.

The first phase of the construction of transfer station for sorting and recycling waste costs 71 million dinars, part of which was provided by the municipality of Bujanovac, part by the Coordination Body for the Municipalities of Presevo, Bujanovac and Medvedja, while the municipality of Bujanovac applied for part of the funds to the Ministry of Economics of the Republic of Serbia.
