BUJANOVAC IS ONE OF THE SIX CITIES IN SERBIA WITH A POSITIVE POPULATION GROWTH

6. November 2018.

Bujanovac –  Of the 169 cities and municipalities in Serbia, Bujanovac is among the 6 that had a positive population growth in 2017. However, in spite of that, Bujanovac had a decreased birth rate this year compared to the ones in previous years.

According to the statistics, apart from Bujanovac, Novi Pazar, Sjenica, Novi Sad, Presevo and Tutin had a greater number of births than deaths, too.

The demographic charts show that Serbia has the lowest population growth rate in comparison  to all the former Yugoslav republics. On the other hand, only 32 out of 233 countries on the planet have been declining in population, whereas only 18 countries, of which 17 are located in Europe, have a negative birthrate. Of the 18 countries that had a decrease in population, 13 of them are faced with a negative population growth and migration, and Serbia is among them, says Ivan Marinkovic, PhD, a research associate of the Institute of Social Sciences.

He says that from 35,000 to 38,000 more people die than are born in our country per annum, so that it is not surprising that we “lost” from 350,000 to 380,000 inhabitants between two censuses. In addition, due to the emigration of young people, we have a very unfavorable age structure - the average age of the population of our country, he says, is almost 43.
