BUJANOVAC GETS A TRANSFER STATION FOR WASTE AND A WASTEWATER TREATMENT UNIT

5. August 2013.

Bujanovac - The municipality of Bujanovac said that it would get a transfer station for waste and a wastewater treatment unit over the next two years, which would largely solve the environmental problems. The Head of the Local Economic Development Office in Bujanovac, Fazila Azemovic, said that the municipality had no money to finance the construction of the transfer station for waste management, the value of which is 1.5 million EUR, but that it actively applied for the resources with different donors, primarily with the European Union (EU).

“The construction of the transfer station will be carried out in several phases. We have already applied with the EU pre-accession fund "Exchange 4" to get a press for the baling of waste, the  value of which is 60, 000 EUR, and if we get it, we will be able to use it immediately to reduce the body of the existing landfill", said Ms. Azemovic. According to her, the municipality  provided the funds for the construction of the access road to the city dump, where the transfer station will be located, the construction of which should begin by the end of the year, while it is expected that the funds for part of the infrastructure will be earmarked from the  next year’s budget of the Coordination Body for the Municipalities of Presevo, Bujanovac and Medvedja.

“Even if we had the means to immediately complete the transfer station for waste management, we wouldn't be able to use it until after the expansion of the regional landfill “Meteris“ near Vranje, to which the garbage from Bujanovac, which can’t be selected, should be taken,  as it was envisaged in the national waste management strategy", said Ms. Azemovic.

She added that if the regional landfill near Vranje wouldn’t be completed before the construction of the transfer station, the municipality was ready to take the selected waste from Bujanovac to the related landfill “Zeljkovac” near Leskovac, so that the city’s utility company “Komunalac” could switch to market business operations as soon as possible.

“We have no money, but we are actively looking for it, and it would, among other things, be used for the project documentation for the construction of the wastewater treatment plant, which costs seven million dinars, but without which we can’t apply with the EU pre-accession funds", said Ms. Azemovic.

The municipality of Bujanovac got a detailed design for the construction of the transfer station for waste management as a donation from the European Partnership with Municipalities Program - EU Progress.
