BORDER CLOSED, SMUGGLERS IN HUMAN BEINGS OPERATING

16. March 2016.

Presevo - According to the data announced by the Customs Administration, the closing of the Balkan migrant route opened the way for the illegal smuggling of migrants through Serbia.

Over the past weekend, customs officers at the Presevo railway border crossing prevented 33 immigrant citizens of Afghanistan, Libya and Syria from illegally crossing the border into Serbia.

During a detailed control of an empty freight train running from Macedonia to Serbia, customs officers, members of the border police and railway workers found  33 foreign nationals in the last three carriages, who had no passports or any other documents to verify their identity.

There was only one woman among them. The immigrants mostly declared themselves as Afghans. Most of them were between 18 and 26 years old.

According to the Customs Administration, further action regarding the case was taken by the police.
