70 YEARS OF TEACHER EDUCATION IN SOUTH SERBIA

8. April 2016.

Vranje – The Teacher Faculty in Vranje of the University of Nis marked, yesterday, the Day of the Faculty, as well as 70 years since the beginning of teacher education in South Serbia.

The Teacher Training School in Vranje was founded in 1946. It turned into the Teacher Academy in 1972, and then into the Teacher Faculty in 1993. However, it changed its name to the Faculty of Education last year.

Professor Suncica Denic, PhD, the Dean of the Faculty of Education, said that 70 years of teacher education was particularly important for Vranje and South Serbia.

“We preserved that heritage. In that sense, we gathered the teachers from those years, bearing in mind that they would have something to say and that their experience would mean something to us. We will organize a round table, too, which will be attended by the first generation of teachers that graduated from the Teacher Training School. We will also organize an official ceremony at which diplomas will be handed out and best students awarded,” said Professor Denic.

There are around 1,000 students studying at three Faculty of Education’s departments. This year, there is a special interest in the Department of IT in Teaching. There are also Departments for Teachers and Educators.

Professor Denic particularly stressed the publishing activity of the faculty.

“We issue the "Yearbook" of the Faculty of Education. With the exception of Nis, this is the only journal issued in the area of South Serbia, so that we are accessible to everyone, "said Professor Denic.

In addition to having students from the region of South Serbia and Kosovo and Metohija, the Faculty of Education also has students from Macedonia and Greece, as well as those from Serbia whose mother tongues are Albanian, Vlach and Roma.

According to information gained from the Faculty of Education, the interest in the Teacher Department declined over the previous two years due to reduced market demand.
