VISIT TO THE OFFICE OF THE HIGH COMMISSIONER ON NATIONAL MINORITIES

On March 12, a visit to the Office of the High Commissioner on National Minorities in the Hague was organized for representatives of the governmental institutions dealing with education and its improvement. The visit was organized by the OSCE Mission to Serbia, while the institutions identified as responsible for the educational process, whose representatives attended the meeting, included the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development, the Office of the Coordinating Body of the Government of the Republic of Serbia for the Municipalities of Presevo, Bujanovac and Medvedja and the Institute for Evaluation of the Quality of Education. The Coordination Body’s Office was represented by Danijela Nenadic, the Director, and by Milica Rodic, the Advisor to the Director.

The High Commissioner commended the work of the governmental institutions that deal with various aspects of education, especially with the education of national minorities, and pointed out that it was extremely important that students from minority communities had the opportunity to receive education in their native language and to learn the official language of their country.

The Office of the High Commissioner on National Minorities supported the development of the Study on the Possibilities of Improving the Knowledge and Learning of Serbian as a Second Language in Presevo, Bujanovac and Medvedja, the results of which were presented in August 2014.  This year, the Office will provide further support to the efforts of the Coordination Body and the Ministry of Education, with the aim of working on the qualitative improvement of the Serbian language classes for students from the Albanian community.

It should be noted that the OSCE Mission has recognized the importance of addressing the recommendations arising from the Study and, in this regard, it financially supports the work on standards for the subject of Serbian as a second language in primary schools, which is one of the medium-term recommendations in the strategically important document.

In addition to the Office of the High Commissioner on National Minorities, work on implementing the recommendations of the Study is supported by the British Embassy and the European Progress program.
