The Official Beginning of the Second Year of Operation of the Subotica-based Faculty of Economics’ Department in Bujanovac

On Friday, October 12, 2012, the Office of the Coordination Body of the Government of the Republic of Serbia for the Municipalities of Presevo, Bujanovac and Medvedja and the Faculty of Economics from Subotica organized the official beginning of the second year of operation of the Subotica-based Faculty of Economics’ Department in Bujanovac. 

Last year, 69 budget students enrolled in the first year of study. This academic year, the same number of students were enrolled, whose studying is financed from the budget of the Republic of Serbia, out of whom 34 are from the Serbian, 33 from the Albanian and two from the Roma community. Throughout the year, the Coordination Body’s Office and the Office of the High Commissioner for National Minorities organized classes in the Serbian language for students to help them attend their lectures and pass their exams. The Coordination Body‘s Office fitted out the classrooms in which second-year students will attend classes and provided textbooks for the first and second-year students from the Albanian community.  The municipality of Bujanovac and the Office of the High Commissioner for National Minorities financed the leasing of the premises where second-year classes would be held.  

The classes held at the Faculty of Economics’ Department in Bujanovac are in two languages.  During the four-year study, students from the Albanian community are instructed in their native language in 14 subjects, with the possibility of doing their diploma paper in Albanian. The lecturers are from Subotica and Tetovo.

In addition to students from the Faculty of Economics in Subotica and their colleagues from the Bujanovac-based Department, representatives of the Faculty of Economics, the Coordination Body’s Office and the municipality of Bujanovac, the official event was also attended by the Rector of the University of Novi Sad Professor Miroslav Veskovic, Minister of Education, Science and Technological Development Zarko Obradovic, Rector, Dean and Professor at the State University in Tetovo, Vuljnet Ahmeti, Aljifeta Selimi and Seraphim Tomovski, Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia Adriano Martins,  Acting Head of the OSCE Mission to Serbia Paula Thiede and President of the Albanian National Council Galip Beqiri.

The establishment and thus-far successful operation of the Faculty of Economics’ Department are the success jointly achieved  by the Faculty of Economics in Subotica, Novi Sad University, State University of Tetovo, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development, the Coordination Body of the Government of the Republic of Serbia for the Municipalities of Presevo, Bujanovac and Medvedja, the municipality of Bujanovac, the Albanian National Council the Government of the Republic of Serbia and the Government of the AP (Autonomous Province) of Vojvodina.  

Partners and friends on this very important project from the beginning were the Office of the High Commissioner on National Minorities and the OSCE Mission to Serbia.  

Significant contribution and support was given to the project by numerous embassies and international organizations.
