SOUTH MORAVA RIVER RISING

31. May 2012.

Vranje, Trgoviste - Over the past few days, around 100 liters of rain per square meter fell in the wider area of South Serbia, which led to an increase in the level of the South Morava River and of the local tributaries, but for the time being, there is no threat of floods.

“The situation is monitored on an hourly basis. The level of the Tripusnica River is slowly increasing, but at the present there is no threat of floods, "said Darko Tomic, President of the municipality of Targoviste. Two years ago, two people drowned in in the floods in this municipality, which caused an extensive material damage, which was repaired with the assistance of donors and the Government of the Republic of Serbia.

The unstable weather with lots of rain could cause the initiation of landslides in the area of Vranje Spa, especially in the area around the "Provonek" dam, where there had already been landslides that obstructed the local traffic towards the dam. The situation in the municipalities of Bujanovac and Presevo is similar, since the water level of the Binacka Morava River is rising, but for the time being there is no danger of flooding.  The heavy rains reduced the quality of fresh fruit, especially that of strawberries and cherries, and caused a decrease in their price at the local markets.
