SERBIAN POLICE OFFICERS RESCUED TWO ABANDONED SYRIAN BABIES

21. October 2015.

Presevo – Police officers Rajko Popov from the Novi Sad Gendarmerie Unit and Slobodan Zlatanovic from the Riot Police Unit of the Police Station in Kucevo found and rescued two Syrian babies in Presevo. The babies were found near a remote part of the fence where refugees enter the Reception Center in Presevo. The babies given to doctors and, according to the information provided by the two police officers, the babies’ families were later tracked down and the babies were given back to them.

Police officers Popov and Zlatanovic said that what they had done was "nothing unusual" and that everyone in their position would have acted in the same manner. “Commendations and awards aren’t important to us but the fact that the babies are fine”, the two of them said.

Those two babies, who were lucky enough to be found by police officers, were not the only such cases.  Children, young and older, sick and disabled, are found on a daily basis next to the fence near the entrance to the Reception Center. They are left there by their family members so that they could enter the Reception Center and get the papers as soon as possible. After several hours of waiting for the asylum certificate, when they try to return for the children, they can’t do so, because the new columns of refugees keep arriving.

“Around five to six thousand refugees entered Serbia on the day when I found the baby. I noticed the child at the bottom of the fence, near the spot where refugees enter the Reception Center, "said police officer Popov.
