RADIO AND TELEVISION OF SERBIA: REPEATERS IN MEDVEDJA TO BE RESTORED

9. November 2017.

Leskovac –“It is unacceptable that our people in South Serbia can listen to Radio Timisoara, and cannot to Radio Belgrade. In view of the sensitivity and importance of the events in South Serbia, the RTS, as a public service, should devote much more attention to this part of our country, "Milivoje Pavlovic, the Head of the RTS Program Council, said in Leskovac.

At the beginning of a public discussion on the contents of RTS programs, during which the program for children and young people was discussed, as well as how the contents of RTS programs meet the cultural needs of citizens, he promised that the said public service would make technological investments in South Serbia.

“It is unacceptable that Radio Belgrade cannot be heard in Medvedja. The impossibility of watching RTS programs has been going on for 17 years, since the bombing, when 17 out of 19 large television and radio transmitters were destroyed. South Serbia is a very sensitive area and I will push in Belgrade for a better treatment of this area. I do not see why the funds for setting up a transmitter in this area cannot be found, and it also seems to me that regional and local issues could be presented more in major RTS programs,” Mr. Pavlovic said.

Mr. Pavlovic said that it was in the public interest for the RTS to produce and broadcast programs of the highest quality, that they should not be politically, culturally and ethnically one-sided, that they should be available to all citizens on equal terms, due to the fact that citizens provide the conditions for the operation of the RTS by paying taxes on it.

Public discussions on RTS programs are organized with the support of the OSCE Mission to Serbia.

This is, after Novi Sad, the second public discussion organized by the RTS in Serbia, while the third and final one will be held next week in Belgrade.
