OUTBREAK OF MEASLES IN PCINJ DISTRICT BECOMES MORE WIDESPREAD

29. January 2018.

Vranje, Bujanovac, Presevo - The Institute of Public Health in Vranje stated that cases of morbidity from measles in Pcinj district were increasing.

Over the past two weeks, there were three new cases of measles in Vranje.

“Those are mostly people who are unvaccinated, incompletely vaccinated or those with an unknown vaccination status against measles. For the time being, there are no elements for declaring an epidemic of measles in the city, "said Sladjan Stankovic, MD, who is an epidemiologist.

An outbreak of measles has been reported in Bujanovac, too, where seven patients have, so far, been registered, while four people are suffering from measles in the municipality of Presevo.

The most unfavorable situation is in Surdulica, where an epidemic of measles has been declared and where 17 cases of measles have been reported so far.

“Increasing numbers of patients contact us every day, while another 30 suspected cases of measles await laboratory confirmation. The patients are immediately referred to hospital. We are working intensely on discovering new cases of measles, so that we could  prevent the spread of the disease, " Dr. Stankovic said.

Since this is a very infectious disease, intensive vaccination of all non-vaccinated and incompletely vaccinated persons, who are between the ages of 1 to 14, is being carried out.
