MOUNTAINOUS VILLAGES IN MEDVEDJA OFTEN WITHOUT ELECTRICITY

11. December 2018.

Medvedja – Over the last few months, the villages located in the hilly and mountainous municipality of Medvedja have been without electricity for days. Particularly vulnerable are the settlements situated along the 10 kilowatt power-supply route of "Tulare", which is located along the administrative line with Kosovo and Metohija.

Nebojsa Arsic, the Mayor of Medvedja, held a meeting on that problem with representatives of the Electric Power Industry of Serbia.  According to Zarko Djordjevic, the Head of the "Power Supply" Branch Office in Medvedja, power failures mainly occurred because of the non-removed forest vegetation under the transmission line route, as well as the frequent breakthroughs on high-voltage insulators on the part of the route where there are dilapidated wooden poles.

Since the Power Supply Branch Office in Medvedja cannot cope with these problems due to the small number of employees and the outdated equipment and vehicles, Nebojsa Arsic, the Mayor of Medvedja, sent a letter to Aleksandar Antic, the Minister of Energy and Mining, and to Milorad Grcic, the Director of the Electric Power Industry of Serbia, asking them for concrete assistance.

It was concluded at the said meeting that they should urgently commence the clearing of vegetation that interfered with the operation of the electric grid, as well as that they should replace the worn-out wooden poles on the so-called “Tulare” route.

"We also talked with representatives of the Electric Power Industry of Serbia about an alternative power supply, which would ensure the supply of electricity to the municipality of Medvedja," Nebojsa Arsic, the Mayor of Medvedja, said.

The local self-government covers an area of 524.23 square kilometers, of which 54.1 percent of the territory is covered by forests. The municipality is composed of 34 local communities with 42 settlements.
