MEETING OF LABOR INSPECTORS, DIRECTORS OF PUBLIC COMPANIES AND REPRESENTATIVES OF LOCAL SELF-GOVERNMENTS IN PCINJ DISTRICT

27. February 2015.

Vranje – At the beginning of the meeting, Slavisa Bulatovic, the Governor of Pcinj district, said that resolving the issue of (unreported) illegal employment was of great importance for Pcinj district. He particularly referred to the failure to appear at the meeting of representatives of the town of Vranje and the municipalities of Presevo and Bosilegrad.

The Director of the Labor Inspectorate, Bojan Jocic, said that the purpose of the meeting was to determine how all the relevant departments and local self-governments could solve the issue of the gray economy and eradicate (unreported) illegal work.

“The Labour Inspection changed its mode of operation last year.  In addition to working in accordance with the appeals and petitions of the parties, the principle of rotation is used, so that the inspectors are sent to other districts in Serbia to operate and carry out control. This produced good results and it will be done in the future, too.  We tried to act preventively and to point out to the employers the shortcoming in their work”, said Mr. Jocic.

He also said that representatives of the Inspectorate had discussed the prevention of (unreported) illegal work with major investors, such as the Corridors of Serbia, the Roads of Serbia and twenty or so large construction firms.

Dejan Kovacevic, the Deputy Director, said that the Inspectorate had no plans to act preventively in the future, but to fine the responsible.

“The development of the National Strategy for Combating the Grey Economy started.  According to some estimates, there are currently around 350, 000 illegal workers.  It is necessary for the construction, traffic or other local inspections to work in coordination with the Labor Inspectorate, so that (unreported) illegal work could be stopped.  Also needed is the support of the media and citizens, who would report such cases. That would result in the registration of workers and, therefore, in more money in the budget of Serbia,” said Mr. Kovacevic.

The Inspectorate announced that it would “ have no emotions” towards the employers who keep (unreported) illegal workers.
