MEDVEDJA IN TWO BOOKS

26. March 2012.

Medvedja - Books are rarely published in Medvedja, because there is neither a publishing house nor a printing office in that municipality.   However, two publications on Medvedja were published and issued in Medvedja at the end of 2011. The tourist organization of Medvedja, with the assistance of the Ministry of Economy and Regional Development, published, in both Serbian and English, with the assistance of the Ministry of Economy and Regional Development, a richly illustrated brochure on Medvedja, which contains interesting information on its history, culture and modern development.  The brochure is focused on the tourist potentials of the region, particularly on Sijarinska Spa, whose 18 water springs have therapeutic properties.

The second book, entitled „Saved from the Oblivion“, was published by the association of citizens  „Gornja Jablanica“ (Upper Jablanica), which is the name of the sub-region situated in the upper course of the Jablanica river. The small town of Medvedja, where important trade routes crossed in the past, is situated in the central part of the region. Around 70 per cent of the population is Serbian and Montenegrin, 26 per cent is Albanian, while the rest of the population includes Roma and members of other ethnic minorities.  The publication contains precious ethnological and historical records about all the peoples and national communities that live in the Upper Jablanica area, as well as the selected wedding customs and poems in Serbian, Albanian and Romany.

The publication of the book was supported by the Coordination Body of the Government of the Republic of Serbia for the Municipalities of Presevo, Bujanovac and Medvedja.
