INCENTIVES FOR LOCAL AGRICULTURE

24. April 2012.

Bujanovac – The Bujanovac self-government will boost agricultural growth this year with 10 million dinars. Most of the resources from the agricultural budget are intended for development of livestock, mainly cattle - breeding, which will be supported with five million dinars. The small stock fund in the area of Bujanovac fell to less than two thousand heads. Registered farmers will receive this year premiums per head of cattle for the purpose of increasing their herds, primarily the number of cattle, as well as for enlarging the production of meat, milk and dairy products.

Until recently, the entire Pcinj district was a renowned tobacco region. After selling the local tobacco industry, tobacco can be seen in Vranje only in the city's coat of arms. The situation in other places is similar. One can nowadays see tobacco fields only in the area of Bujanovac, and to some extent in the area of Presevo, but the current situation can’t be compared with the former one. Thousands of tons of tobacco used to be picked in the region of Bujanovac, while only around 200 tons are picked today. The tobacco used to be produced by twenty or so farmers, while it is currently planted on 200 farms.

Over the past years, the Bujanovac self-government tried to maintain the planting of tobacco by giving premiums. In 2012, premiums will amount to a total of three million dinars. Tobacco growers will receive them after the purchase, depending on the amount of tobacco they submit.

Half a million dinars shall be allocated from the municipal treasury for the expansion of vegetable production in Bujanovac. The fruit growers, too, can count on the support, but only those whose orchards are larger than 30 acres. It is anticipated that nearly half of the active farmers in Bujanovac will get the municipal premium this year.

Around four million dinars will be necessary in 2012  for the program of artificial insemination of the cattle, which the Bujanovac veterinary station has been carrying out for a few years.  Financial assistance is expected to arrive from the Coordination Body of the Government of the Republic of Serbia for the Municipalities of Presevo, Bujanovac and Medvedja. Bujanovac is one of the fifty municipalities in Serbia with difficult farming conditions. There are three thousand registered farms, but only a slightly more than half of them are actively engaged in farming.
