IMPROVEMENT OF SANITARY CONDITIONS OF A WASTE DUMP THAT THREATENS WATER SPRINGS BEGINS

7. October 2011.

Bujanovac – The Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Serbia paid in the account of the municipality of Bujanovac the first installment of 8.5 million dinars, which is for the improvment of  sanitary conditions of a waste dump near the village of Rakovac, said Ljubisa Stosic,  Presidenty of the local community in Rakovac. Mr. Stosic said that Saip Kamberi, President of the Municipality of Bujanovac, had informed him of this and added that the works on improving the sanitary conditions of the waste dump should begin the following week.

“Residents of the village of Rakovac imposed a blockade on the waste dump in their village from June 2 to 6, 2011, and they didn’t allow anyone from Bujanovac and the nearby villages to dump their garbage there. They also requested that sanitary conditions of the dump should be improved and that it should be closed, due to which garbage wasn’t taken from Bujanovac for a whole month. Garbage has been disposed at the existing waste dump for over fifteen years. The waste dump is located 500 meters away from two water springs and 700 meters away from the village houses, while the waste dump is over ten meters high, so that the garbage from it spills onto the nearby farms, due to which they can’t be worked on“, Mr. Stosic said. He added  that the Trnovac River is close to the dump, so that the garbage from the dump falls into it and flows further to the South Morava River.

The Ministry of Environment provided a total of 20 million dinars for improvment of  sanitary conditions of the waste dump near the village of Rakovac, as well as for construction of a transfer station.
