IJAS CONDEMNED THE THREATS MADE AGAINST THE BUJANOVAC NEWS JOURNALIST WHILE HE WAS TAKING PHOTOS OF THE OUTDOOR CAFÉS AREA

27. July 2020.

Bujanovac, Belgrade - The Independent Association of Journalists of Serbia (IAJS) strongly condemned the threats made against the journalist of the Bujanovac News portal, Nikola Stevanović, and called on the competent prosecutor's office and the police to urgently initiate the proceedings and establish the identity of the perpetrator.

Mr. Stevanovic was threatened while he was on a work assignment and while he photographed the outdoor cafes area in Bujanovac Square, it was said in the IAJS statement.

"What are you doing, what are you taking photos of, go away or I will come and teach you a lesson , which is beat you blue. Do not make me stand up ", an  unknown man told the journalist, while the fact that he was sitting in the company of two uniformed police officers, as well as that the threats and insults did not stop even when Mr. Stevanovic introduced and identified himself, makes this case a special one.

The Independent Association of Journalists of Serbia said in a statement that such incidents were a consequence of the negative attitude towards independent media and the creation of an environment in which it was allowed to attack and insult journalists and media workers without any consequences

The IJAS will offer all the necessary help to Mr. Stevanovic and the editorial office of the Bujanovac News portal, while the competent prosecutor's office will officially inform about the grounded suspicion that criminal acts have been committed.
