Grant for Pcinj District’s Regional Solid Waste Management and Environmental Protection Plan

27. April 2012.

Vranje – As part of the USAID’s Sustainable Local Development Program, a 40,000 US $ grant was approved for preparation of the Regional Solid Waste Management Plan for Serbia’s Pcinj District. The grant will enable preparation of the technical documentation for the expansion of the “Meteris” regional landfill and for the construction of solid waste transfer stations in Bujanovac and Presevo. The EU Progress project is going to provide further 196,000 US$ for the needs of preparing the technical documentation. Upon expansion, Vranje’s “Meteris” landfill will become accessible to the entire region, thus contributing to the regional economic development and job creation.

The regional solid waste management plan implies the establishment of partnerships among the municipalities of Vranje, Bujanovac, Presevo, Vladicin Han, Surdulica, Bosilegrad and Trgoviste, thus enabling the much-needed utility services and modern technology for the environmental protection of the entire Pcinj District.

Assistance with the sustainable development project has been provided to support the inter-municipal partnerships led by Vranje, in order to strengthen the cooperation between the municipalities in southern Serbia, thereby contributing to the regional development.

The regional solid waste management project was supported by the Ministry of Environment, the Office for Sustainable Development of Underdeveloped Areas, the Coordination Body of the Government of the Republic of Serbia for the Municipalities of Presevo, Bujanovac and Medvedja and the Center for Development of Jablanica and Pcinj Districts.
