FIRE IN BUJANOVAC

6. September 2012.

Source: Official Gazette - Nis / Bujanovac - A fire broke out near the village of Breznica, which is situated above Bujanovac. The fire started in rough terrain, where there is some unexploded ordnance, so that it impossible to extinguish it. There are only two fire crews monitoring it, said Vedran Taskovic, Fire Department Battalion Commander for the Pcinj district.

Mr. Taskovic said that the fire and a lot of thick smoke, which could be seen above Bujanovac, were spreading through the oak and beech forest, and that they were moving towards the village of Breznica and a military base in the area.

"It is impossible to extinguish the fire from the land, because the terrain is extremely inaccessible and there is some unexploded ordnance there, so that the access to some areas of the region is prohibited. It is also impossible to use helicopters and aircraft to put out the fire, as it broke out in the area of theadministrative line with Kosovo and Metohija, where flights are banned”, Mr. Taskovic said.

According to him, members of the fire and forest management team are on call near the road to the village of Breznica, the access to which had been previously made by the army, where the extinguishing of fire, when it comes that far, would be possible.  Mr. Taskovic said that there was no danger that the fire would endanger the settlements and facilities.
