DOCTORS OF NIS MILITARY HOSPITAL PROVIDE MEDICAL TREATMENT TO ASYLUM SEEKERS IN PRESEVO

24. June 2015.

Presevo – Several dozens of asylum seekers, who had illegally come to Presevo across the Macedonian-Serbian border, were taken care of by the physicians of Nis military hospital at the point for triage and emergency care.

As it was published on the official website of the Ministry of Defense and the Army of Serbia, the persons at issue are immigrants from African and Middle Eastern countries, who cross the border in search of asylum, while some of them, according to the doctors, require serious medical care. There are many people suffering from tuberculosis, scabies and lice, as well as those with wounds on the feet from walking. There is also a danger of an outbreak of epidemic and infection.

Doctors of Nis hospital provided medical assistance at the medical point, which they had set up themselves near Presevo Police Station

Due to the large influx of immigrants that Presevo had been faced with over the past days, the municipality was visited by the Defense Minister Bratislav Gasic. The Minister also suggested that the receiving point for asylum seekers, which had so far been improvised in the area between the mosque and police station, should be relocated to an abandoned factory of Vranje Tobacco Industry in Presevo.

Ahmet Alimi, the Secretary of the Red Cross Branch Office in Presevo, said that a new medical point of the Serbian Army was of great importance, since asylum seekers had, until then, received emergency medical treatment at a local health center, which didn’t have sufficient capacity for the job.

Specialists in internal medicine Lt. Col. Tihomir Kocic and in blood transfusion Major Dragan Tatic are in charge of the medical point of the Military Hospital in Nis.

According to the Ministry of Defense, only yesterday, around 2,000 people attempted to cross the border between Serbia and Macedonia, of which around 1, 600 were prevented from doing so, while the rest of them managed to reach Presevo.
