CITIZENS FROM SOUTH AND EAST SERBIA LEAVE THE COUNTRY THE MOST

28. April 2015.

Belgrade - According to the publication "Serbia in the Process of International Migration," by Vladimir Stankovic, which was published by the Republic Statistical Office, most people that live and work abroad are from South and East Serbia, a bit more than 110, 000 of them, followed by those from Sumadija and western Serbia, around 104,000 of them, while there are by half fewer citizens of Belgrade and Vojvodina.

Statistical records show that there are six times fewer of those with no schooling or with incomplete primary school education, who are mostly from southern and eastern Serbia.

Austria, Germany and Switzerland are the “promised land” for our people, where half of the total number of migrants go, while the percentage of returnees is the highest in the aforementioned countries, too. The average length of their stay abroad is around 11 years.

The data on migration of the population don’t include the territory of Kosovo and Metohija, while the response to the survey on migration of the population in the municipalities of Presevo and Bujanovac was inappropriate due to the boycott of the survey by the majority of members of the ethnic Albanian community, the Republican Statistics Office said.
