ANDJELA’S NEW HEART

25. July 2013.

Bujanovac - After having had a heart transplantation surgery in Vienna, a 13-year-old Andjela Aleksic returned home, which is at the village of Borovac near Bujanovac, recovered, healthy and smiling. The surgery was difficult, the recovery long, but the pre-transplantation period was particularly hard.

We wrote, last July, about the twelve-year Andjela Aleksic from Borovec near Bujanovac, the girl that required heart transplantation. Owing to the help provided by numerous good people, the Aleksic family managed to defeat the illness and bureaucracy.

Andjela is now playing with her sister and brother in the yard and she can even ride a bicycle. A year ago, the working capacity of her heart was only 28 percent, and she was resting, lying in bed, taking the required daily doses of her drugs and waiting.

"Now everything is normal, as it is with all healthy children”, says Slavoljub, Andjela’s father, "it’s just that she must take her drugs for the rest of her life, so that her body wouldn’t reject the alien tissue.”

Andjela received the new heart on January 3.

"She told me: Mom, an uncle phoned me to say that I had received the heart of his little daughter, and he wished that I were healthy and that I had a long life and a speedy recovery“, said  Marina Aleksic.

Time was the enemy, but humane people helped. One half of the necessary amount of 130, 000 euros was raised within a few months, while the other half was collected soon afterwards.

While Andjela was recovering in Vienna, her parents and her brother were by her side. Her sister Jovana and her grandmother were waiting for her at the village of Borovec.  Her grandmother says that now,  after Andjela  had survived everything, she is the happiest granny in the world.

Dejan Tricković, President of Vranje’s city assembly, said that he would try to help the family  with housing and employment

Andjela will be travelling to Vienna for medical check- ups once a month, while she’ll take her six grade exams, which she missed to take in June, in August.  She will make up for all the lost time.
