ALBANIAN AND SERBIAN SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN BUJANOVAC FIXED UP THE CANTEEN AT “SEZAI SUROI” SCHOOL

8. March 2021.

Bujanovac - In the future, the students of the "Sezai Suroi" secondary school in Bujanovac will eat on much more pleasant premises, because together with their friends from the "Saint Sava" secondary school, they fixed up a canteen in their school.

Fifteen or so young people painted the wall in the canteen and the chairs and put in the tables on which they will eat in the future.

This was an important experience for both Albanian and Serbian secondary school students and everyone agreed that a similar action should be organized again.

Leoneta Beciri, a fourth-grade student of the “Sezai Suroi” secondary school, said that everyone had had a good time, but also had done a useful thing not only for their peers, who would use the canteen until the end of the school year, but also for future generations of that school.

As she said, the school “did not have a canteen before, so that the students mostly ate either in the hallway or in the yard, depending on the weather conditions".

“We had the opportunity to hang out and work together with the students of the “Saint Sava” secondary school. For me, it was the first activity in which I had the opportunity to participate together with young people from other communities. I have to say that I had difficulty communicating with them because of the language, but it was fun to watch us try to express ourselves using body language and gestures. We really enjoyed every minute of it”, Leoneta said.

This was an unforgettable experience for the students of the Serbian secondary school too, who said that their friends from the "Sezai Suroi" school had welcomed them nicely, said the student Stefan Stosic.

“By working together, we gave a face-lift to one room of their school, and we also had a great time. My friend Katarina and I have already had the opportunity to participate in similar workshops, so we knew exactly what needed to be done. The only drawback of this hanging out is that we did not have enough time to get to know our new friends better, so we have to rectify that. We are looking forward to socializing with them again", said Stefan, a student of the "Saint Sava" secondary school in Bujanovac.

This is only the first of the planned joint actions of young people of Serbian and Albanian nationality in Bujanovac, during which they will work together on providing better conditions for young people growing up in that city.

This activity is implemented as part of the project "Amplifying Local Voices for Equitable Development (ALVED)", which is funded by the Government of the United Kingdom, and implemented by the Peaceful Change initiative and People in Need, in partnership with Civic Initiatives, PEN - Peer Educators Network and NGO “Aktiv”.
