16 MORE BOOKS IN THE ALBANIAN LANGUAGE

17. July 2014.

Mentor Nuhiu, the Vice President of the National Council of Albanians (NCA), said in Bujanovac that as of the following school year, 16 more new books in the Albanian language would emerge in schools in which classes are taught in Albanian and added that the said books had been provided thanks to the efforts of the NCA and the Ministry of Education.

At the celebration of the fourth anniversary of the NCA at the cultural center in Bujanovac, Mr. Nuhiu said that 85 books had been provided for primary schools that school year, but that the translation of secondary school textbooks into Albanian hadn’t started yet.

“We act in accordance with the Law on Primary Education and the Law on National Councils, which guarantee the exercising of all our rights to education in our mother tongue.   The National Council started working as it should and in the interest of the Albanians living in Serbia, "said Mr. Nuhiu.

Mr. Nuhiu stated that the Albanians in Bujanovac and Presevo, during the process of establishing the NSA, had doubts but that thanks to the results of the NCA, they realized that the body was necessary for the Albanians living in Serbia, so that they could exercise their rights in the areas of culture, education, information and the official use of the Albanian language.

At the celebration of the fourth anniversary of the NCA, Zoran Stankovic, the President of the Coordination Body for the Municipalities of Presevo, Bujanovac and Medvedja, greeted, on behalf of the Serbian government, the attendees of the event.

Peter Burkhard, the Head of the OSCE Mission to Serbia, said that the OSCE had been supporting the NCA since the very beginning and he called on all the Albanians living in South Serbia to participate in the upcoming elections for the NCA, since a significant number of them had boycotted the first elections for the NCA and the establishment of the body.
